Roundtable on Animal Legal Personhood

The Cambridge Centre for Animal Rights Law is pleased to support the Roundtable on Animal Legal Personhood: Perspectives from Continental Law, co-organised by Eva Bernet Kempers, who is a Visitor at our Centre. The aim of this Roundtable, which will take place on March 26th from 5-7pm (UK time), is to open the floor to animal law scholars working in the continental civil law tradition in order to enrich and diversify the debate on animal personhood. Animal Rights Law Course

We are again this year offering our course on Animal Rights Law, every Tuesday from 5.00-6.30 pm Weeks 1-8 (Lent Term) starting next Tuesday 26th January. Attendance is open to all. The course will cover the history of animal welfare and animal rights laws, the jurisprudence of animal rights, including legal personhood, animal rights and human rights, locus for animal plaintiffs, draft animal rights treaties, and the latest animal rights law cases. Lectures will be live (on Zoom), with the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the topics. Recordings will be made available. Click here for more information about the course. Talking Animals, Law & Philosophy Term Card

We are pleased to release the Lent Term card of the Talking Animals, Law & Philosophy series. We will kick off the term on January 26th with a presentation by Professor Maneesha Deckha on the topic “Animals as Legal Beings: Contesting Anthropocentric Legal Orders”. On February 4th, Eva Bernet Kempers, Visiting Student at our Centre and PhD candidate at Antwerp University, will talk about “Animals as Legal Persons: A Necessity or a Luxury? A Perspective from Continental Law”. Dr Josh Jowitt, Visiting Student at our Centre and Lecturer at Newcastle University, will deliver a paper called “The Elephant in the Room: Happy and the Normative Structure of Legal Personhood” on February 24th. Dr Angie Pepper from Roehampton University will be joining us on March 5th with a presentation on “Caring in Non-Ideal Conditions: Animal Rescue Organisations and Morally Justified Killing”. Finally, Pablo Pérez Castelló, Visiting Student at our Centre and PhD candidate at Royal Holloway University will deliver a talk on “The Recognition of Wild Animal Communities in the Australian Constitution” on March 17th.
