Richard Martin

On 22 July 1822, the Irish animal rights campaigner and Member of Parliament Richard Martin succeeded in getting the UK’s first animal protection law—the Cruel Treatment of Cattle Act—passed. Nicknamed ‘Martin’s Act’, this law paved the way for more progressive animal protection legislation in the UK and beyond.

To celebrate the bicentennial of Martin’s Act, the Cambridge Centre for Animal Rights Law is running a fundraising campaign with the aim of raising £100,000 in 2021-22. We have created the following brochure to explain our work to date and what we hope to achieve in the future to continue the dialogue started by Martin.

You can see a list of our existing donors here.

You can download our brochure as a slide deck or as spreads.
