Talking Animals, Law & Philosophy Term Card

We are delighted to release the Easter Term card of the Talking Animals, Law & Philosophy series. Delcianna Winders (Vermont) and Elan Abrell (NYU) will kick off the term with a presentation on “Slaughterhouse Workers, Animals, and the Environment” (10 May). This will be followed by a talk on “The Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act 2022: Stating the Obvious or an Obvious Step up?” by Paula Sparks (ALAW) on 23 May. Finally, on a date that will be announced soon, Justin Marceau (Denver) and Lori Gruen (Wesleyan) will launch their book “Carceral Logics” (CUP 2022) in our series. Call for abstracts from PhD students

Our Centre is inviting abstracts from PhD students interested in presenting and discussing their research at the upcoming annual European Animal Rights Law Conference. The PhD student Workshop will take place on 16 September 2022 at St Edmund’s College, Cambridge, and will precede the European Animal Rights Law Conference itself, which will be held from 17-18 September in the same location. A number of fully funded places (incl accommodation and food for the entire Conference) are available, plus some travel grants if necessary for the applicant to attend. Winners of the Essay Competition 2022

We are delighted to announce the winners of this year's Animal Rights Law Essay Competition. In the university category, Elien Verniers (PhD candidate, University of Ghent) was awarded the first place (£750). Francesca Jackson (LLB student, Lancaster University) came in second (£500), and the third place (£250) went to Ashleigh Best (PhD candidate, Melbourne Law School). In the secondary school student category, we awarded a Winning Commendation and two Special Commendations. The schools of those who were awarded a Commendation received prizes of £250.
